5 Minute Morning Balance Ritual

This article is dedicated to a woman that I've never met and probably never will. Tall with dark, dark hair, she was perfectly manicured in a tailored suit with high-heeled pumps. We shared a subway car in Manhattan two years ago. She was standing, holding onto the subway car strap and meticulously applying three coats of mascara as the train bumped and shifted. With my jaw dropped in reverence of her talent, I imagined this to be her morning routine because she was REALLY good at it. (I can barely put on clear lip gloss in a moving vehicle.)

We all have morning routines and daily repetition makes us experts at them. What's your morning routine? Does it help to balance and center you for the day - or leave you feeling scattered?

I invite you to try a powerful five minute morning ritual to set your day off with awareness and consciousness, moving daily towards the balance and fulfillment you desire. The ritual is very simple, consisting only of three simple questions. The secret is to be honest, give yourself the 5 minutes... and to ask the questions.

Question 1: What am I grateful for?

This question holds astonishing power. If you only remember one thing from this ritual, please remember this question! Write it down and put it in at least three very visible places. Maybe you will choose your bedroom dresser, your desk or the dashboard of your car. This question has the capacity to change a mood and soften a heart in seconds.
What are you grateful for? WHO are you grateful for? What are the gifts you've been given in your life that you sometimes take for granted? What are some gifts that are so obvious that you may never even notice them?

Question 2: What are my intentions for today?

Where are you now and where do you want to be at the end of the day? Meaning, what do you want to accomplish today? Beyond the "doing", how do you want to feel? How do you want to be or conduct yourself during the day?
Close your eyes and imagine your day is set on a theatrical stage. How do you want the audience to feel about you as they watch you "play"? What do you want them to notice about how you are being? How do you want to be if things don't go as planned?
Asking yourself this one question may be the most powerful way to achieve what you want in life. After all you can't get to where you want to be if you don't know where that is.

Question 3: What's most important today?

Keeping in mind your gratitude and intentions for the day, consider again all the aspects of your life: personal development, your intimate relationships, your family, friends, finances, career, health, recreation and spirituality.
Now, close your eyes and imagine yourself 10 years from now. What does the future you say is most important for you today? It's really easy to come up with what SHOULD BE most important (as defined by society) but resist the urge to give into that voice. Take a deep breath and listen deeper. Trust that you have all the answers inside.

Some find that it helps to ask this follow-up question: What ONE THING can I do today to significantly improve the quality of my life? Don't concern yourself with the size or magnitude of your answer. It changes. Some days it might be "apply to graduate school" and other days it might be "organize my office".

Helpful Tips to Make It Stick

To make this ritual "stick", create a fertile "habit-forming" environment:

1. Fly solo. Use the five minutes as valuable alone time to ground yourself. Once this ritual is second nature, then I invite you to use these three questions in conversation with your family, significant other, and even work teams.

2. Be consistent. Select a specific time and location to perform your morning ritual. For example, lying in bed from 7:30-7:35am or on your morning commute from 8:30-8:35am.

3. Take it lightly. Have fun. Unpleasant tasks don't become habits. The morning ritual isn't a task. It's a way of consciously looking out at your day. Set the intention to create a daily ritual; to create a habit. But don't sweat it if you miss a day.

4. Start small. Stick to five minutes in the beginning. Perhaps you'll expand to 10, 15 or 30 minutes. Maybe not. A new program quickly gets abandoned when if feels like a burden, especially in the morning!

5. Keep no secrets. Tell someone about your morning ritual and ask the friend, coach, significant other or whomever to support you in keeping on track. This might sound like, "Terry, I've started a morning practice to keep myself balanced and focused on what's important during the day. It would be really helpful if you asked me how it's going every now and then. It just really helps to have you know what I'm up to."

How to Select a Dresser

We most commonly identify the bed as the focal point of a bedroom, hence the name, but often to not pay as much attention to the secondary focal point - the dresser. These furniture pieces ground the room and are essential for storage. When selected appropriately, they also contribute to the décor and style of a bedroom.

Selecting a dresser is similar to selecting any other piece of furniture. It is important to measure the space you want to fill and to select a piece that will fit these limitations. Be sure to plan enough space to allow the drawers to fully open. To do this, measure the depth of the dresser itself and add about a foot of extra space.

After you have decided where to place the dresser, decide what its function will be. If it is only going to hold shirts, all of the drawers can be the same size. If you want to store other items, like jewelry, or a variety of items, like socks and pants, look for a dresser with a variety of drawer sizes to suit your needs.

Next, think about the style of your décor and how you want the dresser to fit in. It can be a complementary piece or a focal point. If you can describe your style in terms of a style movement (classical, craftsman, modern, etc), explaining your choice to a salesperson or pinpointing the correct style online will be much easier. Also consider if you want a painted, stained or natural piece, as these finishes also factor into cost and appearance.

Once you have determined upon these main criteria, set a budget. The budget will be an important determining factor in the materials you choose. Materials are factored into the cost of the dresser and have an impact on durability, so even if shopping on a budget, make sure you are getting materials that will hold up.

You generally have four choices for materials:

Genuine wood is created from actual tree trunks. This will be described as hardwood, from deciduous trees, or softwood, from evergreen trees. The names hardwood and softwood are associated with the type of seeds produced and not by the actual strength of the wood itself. Genuine wood will be the most durable of your choices, but is also among the most expensive.

Rubberwood furniture is a more eco-friendly option. Sap from this type of wood is frequently used to make rubber, leaving the wood to be harvested for furniture. When a rubberwood tree is cut down, another is planted in its place. This type of wood is also quite durable and is more expensive than engineered wood products.

Engineered wood products are created by mixing recycled wood products together with heat and pressure. A common type of engineered wood is MDF, which is known for its strength and versatility. Almost as durable as genuine wood, engineered products are typically less expensive.

Laminates are created when layers of material are pressed together and covered with a resin. They are often available with a faux wood-grain pattern and are typically the least expensive and least durable of the wood products.

In addition to the type of wood, there are other construction elements that will add to the durability of a dresser.

A butt joint consists of two pieces of wood, flush aligned and attached using nails, staples or glue. This is the weakest joint and should be used with corner blocks to improve durability.

A rabbeted joint has a groove to correspond with a non-groved piece. This joint is slightly stronger than a butt joint, but should also be used with corner blocks.

A tongue and groove joint fits together like two puzzle pieces. One piece has the side portions cut out and the other is cut in the opposite way so the two fit together. These often look like butt joints but are much stronger.

A mortise and tendon joint works the same way as a tongue and groove. One piece has a portion that sticks out and the other has a center that is cut out. These also often look like butt joints but are much stronger.

A doweled joint uses two pieces of wood with holes in them. A dowel is used to connect the two pieces. Since these joints are inside of the wood, these also look like butt joints but are stronger.

Dovetailed joints are often used in drawer construction. These joints are made by interlocking notches at the edges of the wood, most commonly with a flared shape.

Since there are so many decisions to make when purchasing a dresser, it is a good idea to prepare before you start shopping. Decide on what types of materials and joints fit in your price range and what style will complement your décor.

How To Have A Western Decor Bedroom If You Love Pastel Colors

Often people who love pastel colors think they have to give up having a western décor bedroom because pastel colors are not popular colors in western decor. Find out how you how you can incorporate beautiful pastel colors into a western decor bedroom.

All light pastel colors provide a striking contrast with black. If you don't like the bold contrast of black with pastels, white can be the perfect companion to these light colors. Most pastels also look wonderful with silver. Consider these three colors, black, white and silver when creating your western décor bedroom. Silver conchos and silver stars are a staple of western themed items and although many times you will see them combined with leather or faux leather in brown, consider these gleaming silver decorations with pastel colors as well.

When deciding on a bed for your western decor bedroom, consider iron headboards and footboards. Many styles of iron beds are reminiscent of the "old west". You will be able to find handsome reproductions in white, silver or black. Choose a simple design without scrollwork. If you like a newer style, you may want to consider an iron rustic profile bed that allows you to select western iron profiles such as stars, horses, boots and longhorns designs incorporated into the design.

Western bedding in pastel colors will be difficult to find so a good choice is solid color pastel bedding preferably in a faux suede or microfiber fabric or a quilt made with the pastel color of your decor. Quilts with a star pattern are particularly nice. If you use a solid color, you can enhance the western look by attaching gleaming silver conchos or silver stars to a tailored bed skirt and adding some upscale western throw pillows. Tapestry throw pillows often have some soft pastel colors in the tapestry and are a wonderful choice. If the throw pillows are solid color you can decorate those with silver conchos as well. Don't go overboard with this as it can quickly go from upscale to tacky!

For a coordinated look use the same bedding fabric for the draperies and valance. If you are using a quilt, you might consider a quilt valance only. The drapery rod should match the silver, white or black of the headboard. No pinch pleated draperies please, stick to valances or rod pocket or tab draperies. If you have added silver conchos or stars to your bedding you can echo a few on the valances or draperies, again keeping in mind that a little goes a long way! You can also add metal drapery tie backs with western profiles ranging from stars with conchos to longhorn steer and even spurs. These are available in silver, black or white finish.

For western wall décor use a large western tapestry wall hanging with a hanging rod in the same color as your bed (silver, white, black). Make sure that the wall hanging contains some of the pastel color of your bedroom so it complements your décor. This is a particularly good choice if you are using the same or similar tapestry throw pillows. You can also drape a matching throw at the end of the bed or on a chair. A large really beautiful western tapestry wall hanging can become the focal point of your room.

If you have black iron for your bed choice you will find large selection of black iron lamps for western décor. You can use a black western profile theme lamp with a shade that matches your pastel color. Or, you can use a pastel lamp, preferably not shiny, with a black shade and add silver conchos to your shade. If you have a silver or white bed frame you may want to choose a pastel lamp, without a shiny finish and add a smooth white shade or smooth pastel shade and add some silver conchos or silver stars. Stay away from pleated shades or you may end up with an outdated look. With an antique reproduction iron bed, a nice choice of lighting is electric oil lamp reproduction with or without a glass shade.

One of the nicest selections for western decor area rugs are braided rugs. The high quality cloth braided rugs will last for years and come in beautiful pastel colors in various shades. These beautiful rugs go wonderfully with iron beds while picking up the pastels of your room.

And last but not least, how can you work in a dresser or bureau with an iron bed and pastel western decor theme? We suggest a plain dresser, bureau and bedside table painted and distressed with the pastel color of your room. Replace the knobs and drawer pulls with western style knobs. There is a wide selection of drawer pulls and knobs with horses, stars, longhorns, silver conchos and bit shanks with German silver. Add a mirror either in black metal with rustic western profiles if you have a black rustic profile bed or you could add a plain mirror painted and distressed to match your dresser.

Fasten antique door knobs to a painted board and hang as a wall decoration to hold western hats, western belts and other cowgirl gear. Finish off your room with some pastel pillar candles. You can wrap these with barbed wire to add a western touch.
