Think Oak's Too Expensive? Try Unfinished

My friend Jan's always been sort of eccentric.

To look at her, you wouldn't think she'd be the kind of woman who would change her own oil in her car or likes to go crawling around in caves, but she does. At 5' 2" and very thin (she won't say how much she weighs), you'd think she'd break if you touched her. Recently, she's become interested in oak furniture. More specifically, unfinished oak furniture.

Why unfinished? According to Jan, it's cheaper. Plus, there are so many companies out there today that specialize in unfinished furniture, it's easy to find. Oak and pine are the most popular kinds. Jan says oak appeals to her more because it's always been a symbol of quality.

Of course, another reason Jan chooses unfinished oak furniture is because she likes to do everything herself. In this case, it means she gets to finish the wood.

If you're looking to buy unfinished oak furniture, there are some things to keep in mind. The first is that there are basically two types of oak that are used in furniture-making, those being white oak and red oak.

As you've probably guessed, red oak is the darker of the two. White oak, while being lighter, is also a bit more durable than the red. Both, however, are excellent for finishing yourself and, if done correctly, can produce stunning pieces of furniture.

I must admit, I was surprised at the price difference between finished and unfinished oak furniture. Depending on how much furniture you're buying, unfinished can cost about half as much as finished. But, with all the time it takes to finish the furniture, is it really worth it?

According to Jan, yes it is. She's able to finish several pieces of oak furniture in a weekend. In fact, once you get the hang of it, it flies. It even becomes fun. Once you see how you can transform a bland piece of furniture into a work of art, it's easy to see how this work can get almost addicting.

Jan now buys a combination of furniture from online stores, flea markets, and yard sales. At flea markets and yard sales, she typically buys finished furniture at very low prices, strips it, and refinishes herself. She then sells this furniture for many times the price she paid for it. She rarely works with anything other than oak.

Although she started out just trying to furnish her own home, her new-found hobby has turned into quite a money maker for her.
