A Common Sense Guide to Home Security

It is true what they say. Your home is your castle. Making your home a place where you feel comfortable and secure should not cost you tens of thousands of dollars. A few well-spent dollars and a little common sense can do the trick.

An experienced criminal can pick your valuables clean in as little as 10 minutes. Criminals know that when it comes to hiding valuables in a home, most people think alike. Take this quick test. If someone gave you a couple hundred dollars, where in your home would you hide it? If you answered, "Somewhere in my bedroom" you're not alone. For sheer convenience most people hide valuables in the bedroom. Dresser drawers, jewelry boxes, under the bed, night tables, in between the mattress, and closets are by far the most common places to hide valuable items. Home invaders are well aware of these hiding places and will make quick work of your bedroom. Consider other areas in the home such as hallways and kitchens that are less common places to hide valuables. Hallways and kitchens are higher traffic areas in the home and provide ample places to hide your valuables.

For hiding and storing important items and documents you might want to consider a fireproof safe. A fireproof save can protect your valuables and documents not only from criminals, but also from disasters such as fire or flood. One security option that many fireproof safes provide is the ability to bolt the safe to your floor. Bolting the safe to the floor is a great way to keep the safe secure and prevent someone from walking away with your important items. Bolting the safe to a fixed location on the floor in your home will also allow you to quickly find your valuables in the event of a natural disaster. You'll know exactly where in the house to locate your safe.

Get to know your neighbors, or at least some of them. There have been instances when families have been away on vacation and criminals have pulled up to the home with a truck and hauled away televisions and furniture in broad daylight. When asked, the neighbors said, "We thought it must be someone you knew" or "We thought maybe you were moving." Let at least one neighbor know when you will be gone for an extended period of time and give them a way to contact you or someone you trust if they see something suspicious. Having neighbors looking out for each other is one of the easiest and cost effective ways to prevent a robbery.

When you are away for a few days should you leave your window shutters and blinds open or closed? There are two schools of thought here. Some would say that by keeping your shutters and window blinds closed you prevent criminals from looking in and identifying your valuables. There is some merit to this line of thinking. However, there are advantages to keeping your shutters and blinds open while you're away. If someone is wandering around in your home looking for valuables they are more likely to be seen with the house shutters open. When leaving for an extended period of time, let you neighbors know that you plan to keep the shutters and blinds open while you're gone. If someone enters your home and closes the window blinds to prevent themselves from being seen, you're neighbors will know something is wrong and contact you or the authorities.

Video surveillance is another affordable option for keeping your home secure. IP video cameras are a simple and effective way to monitor your home while you're away. An IP video camera works by providing a video feed through your high-speed Internet connection that can be viewed from a remote location via a PC or even your phone browser. Simply place the IP camera unit in the desired location or locations in your home and connect it to your computer via a USB connection. By accessing a predetermined web address through another PC or enabled phone browser, you'll be able to monitor the live video stream from your home in real time. IP video cameras can provide an additional layer of home security and peace of mind. You'll know what's going on while you're gone.

Effective home security does not have to break the bank. With some common sense and minimal investment you can secure your home and truly make your home your castle.
